Chanukah: Sixth Candle

A few more Chanukah-licht photos from the archives!

After a certain point, there are no more photos of me actually lighting any menorah – just my brothers. Because as a girl, once I was older than pre-school age, I was “yotzei the mitzvah” (fulfilled the mitzvah) through my father’s menorah-lighting. The boys each lit their own menorahs, but the girls merely watched. I find it poignant that one of the few Chanukah photos in which I appear past my pre-school years shows me with head bent, poring over the card containing the brachos (blessings) and zemiros (songs) for the menorah-lighting ritual.
