Ferocity, Smart and Tender

My lady sets her heart
strife and hatred
with brains attacked
to banish tears

I’ve started doing “blackout poetry,” in which I take pages from old books and create poems from their words. After a few experiments, I’ve settled on my method. I am using an old textbook titled Women’s Life in Greece and Rome: A Source Book in Translation. It has a lot of excerpts from primary sources saying some really horrible stuff about women. I’m using those horrible words to create new, empowering poetry – and calling this “Text Rehabilitation.” I’m also pairing each poem with a figure from coloring books that I have been working with recently.
